It is remarkable how at different points in one’s life, various characteristics become more valuable than others. For much of my life, appearance was primary. At others, it was having a good time that meant more to me than anything else. Now, it is self-control that I find to be a treasure unequaled by any other possession.
Self-control is not easy to come by. So much of my life has been spent out of control driven by the latest fad that as I experience self-control at times it is like a new found friend. Rather than being driven by other people, self-control allows one to make good decisions whether popular or not. Ironically, having self-control is like having a new freedom from being tossed and turned by forces outside of ourselves.
